I tend to gravitate toward heights.
I seek out hills to run up, like the view from my b-i-l’s Beacon Hill pad, wear high heels. Even my hair gets high (via a topknot, not “teasing”!).
In fact, my heels have been getting higher each season: last spring I ventured into three-inch territory; this fall I’ve been perching on four-inch stems.
But as the gray clouds roll in, my mood is shifting, too, and I’m tired of scraping the sky; I’m leaning more and more toward the flat of the hill.
Today, for instance, I wore dark skinny cropped jeans, a nipped-in navy blazer, and super-pointy tweed flats with a chartreuse velvet ribbon trim. The “right” heels certainly could have worked, but flats seemed to punctuate the look perfectly.
Do you have “high” and “low” days, or are your shoe moods more consistent?
I had never before considered how moods affect my fashion choices. Well, that is not entirely true. I know that when I am really down I am often not up to dress and tend to spend too much time in PJ's. I do think that heels and high-hair does require a certain joie de vivre that flats do not. You are a smarty and always make me think. I like that about you!:-)
ReplyDeleteMy shoe mood is always high!
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful post. so well written and completely relevant to my life. most mondays, even though i feel like wearing my comfiest jeans and flats, i try to throw on heels. they instantly make me stand up straighter and with more confidence so that i'm ready to tackle the week!
ReplyDeleteThat outfit you describe sounds perfect. Just the kind of thing I'd like to wear :-) When I'm blah, I do go for flats, not because they are less stylish but because they are more comfortable. And that's what I'm craving on those days. And now that I think about it, I wear flat-ish boots all winter long. Which is both practical and comfortable to suit the dark, treacherous days.
ReplyDeleteI have "high" and "low" moods. Mostly, I'm in a "low" mood, though not because I'm depressed or sad. I just love flats so much, I always seem to want to wear them.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in knowing where your tweed flats came from.
You know I don't advocate the wearing of flat shoes, so this is a 'red-flag-bull' post...lol
ReplyDeleteI was imagining your outfit which seemed just perfect. I would have worn flats as well.
ReplyDeleteMy shoe mood is erratic just like my shopping mood at the moment.
The flats are from J. Crew--four years ago, but rarely worn until now!
ReplyDeleteFascinating. And I'll sound like a rookie for saying this, but I'm SOOPER impressed that you can function on four inches.
ReplyDeleteMy footwear choices are much more about walking. If I've gotta zip back and forth across campus 5 times in a single day, it's wedges or platforms. If I'll be glued to my chair, heels or not-yet-broken-in shoes of any kind. But mood plays a part, too. No way am I wearing my leopard print calf hair wedges if I'm feeling frumpy and grumpy.
Honestly, I'd be a "Low" for most of the time (due to kids, running errands, driving) but femininely, I'm a steady "High" (except when I'm alone with the kids). It just makes me feel sooo.... leggy ;) (ah, in the summer I'm mostly low .. because I'm leggy enough, wearing short skirts/dresses/pants with bare legs)
ReplyDelete- got you for my weekly blog roundup!
At five feet ten, I rarely wear 4 inch heels, however a heel makes the leg look better. However, I seem to wear a "sensible" heel or something that provides me to keep in step. I went through a "pointy" toe phase, but now and loving these rounded toes and some of the shoes that are designed for comfort. Thirteen years of ballet and toe shoes made my feet strong also somewhat deformed.
