I’m reading Zadie Smith’s On Beauty and am in thrall. Of course I adored Forster’s Howards End, to which this book is an homage, so there was a fair chance that I’d approve, but I’m absolutely delighted.
I love the texture of the home (of course a home would be a central character!), for although it is set in the United States, to me it recalls Charleston, with its woodsy, crafty, hand-painted beauty.
So then: off to read and dream a little today.

I tried to like this book - no doubt it is beautifully constructed - but it just didn't land for me.
ReplyDeleteOT: I want to make you a necklace out of the hawk talon you found!
ReplyDeleteK.Line, I think that finding the winks to Forster is half the pleasure! I'm not usually a fan of academic lit (books about university profs), but this one is hitting the mark.
ReplyDeleteWhoa WendyB--That's quite a suggestion! I actually left it in the forest; twas still attached to a bone and I didn't want to disturb it . . .

ReplyDeleteYou know what EM Foster book I didn't enjoy? Maurice.
ReplyDeleteDid you read it?
And is that a bust of Virgina Woolf on the picture?
...this interior has so much character! lurvvve!!
ReplyDeleteMary-Laure, I haven't read Maurice, but I did, as they say, "see the film" with a young Hugh Grant et al. And yes, the bust is of Woolf; her sister Vanessa did the painting throughout . . .
