Charmed or Alarmed?

The other day I had lunch with my daughters at their new (private) school.

As I was waiting outside one daughter’s classroom, a delightful little line of four-year-olds came meandering down the hall en route to computer class.

One winsome lassie, with big blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair, took pains to look me up and down and announced, sweetly, “I like your shoes.”

Granted, I was wearing my Chie Mihara sandals, but should one be charmed or alarmed at the girl's keen fashion sense at such a tender age?

  1. Aww, how cute. I think (hope!!) it was just one of those cute things little kids say without thinking much about it. One time my cousin's kid said she likes my arms. They're just like anyone else's arms, but if she likes them that's OK with me!

  2. Charmed, I suppose, as long as she's not on you to buy her a pair!

  3. Charmed, not alarmed. I really don't think it was a fashion comment, but the honesty of innocence. And those Chie Mihara sandals are lovely... I wore the same to a private view lately, and even my fashion-blind boyfriend said he liked them!

  5. I wouldn't be alarmed. I remember being very aware when I was 4 or 5 years old that a) my mom was tall, had red hair and was much more beautiful than other little girls' moms and b)that she dressed in a far more sophisticated way. I remember being struck at that age(and weirdly enough, it worked out that way in reality as well)that I would never ever be as tall or as beautiful as she was. I ended up being 5'2" - she was 5'10". And I always loved my mom's shoes, too. She had a pair of Clark wingtip brogues with tall heels in forest green that I've been mourning over ever since I found she'd passed them on...

  6. OK, I'm not a parent, but I'd be a bit alarmed. When I was 4, shoes were the LAST thing on my mind. Then again, maybe she was just playing myna bird.

  7. On the plus side - compliments from a child are the best - they don't lie.

  8. We're living in a different society now. That's the norm in NYC--kids are simply more aware because their parents are. Try to see who her mother is--I bet she'd be a walking fashion plate.

  9. Me, I'm freaked out.

Love the old VOGUE cover, by the way.
